Salzburg, Austria
So i have diverted myself away from Vienna and gone west to Salzburg and in a few hours will be leaving to hit Munich, Germany. At no other point in my journey will i be closer to munich then now and i will also avoid pre-oktoberfest crowds..
Salzburg is a small city with a gourgeous blue-green river (like interlaken) winding through. I visited a huge fortress, a small katakomb and went to a classical music recital in a the marble hall of some palace last night. I heard pieces by Bach, Mozart (this is his birthplace), Dvorak and Hyden. Most of the pieces where for piano and single violin only, I liked the bach pieces.. both instruments seemed to be at odds with each other, not battling back and forth but almost as if thez were playing different pieces at times.. meet a family from the US with a son living in Somerville who is applying to med school.
Tomb in the katakomb
Austrians playing a giant game of chess.. The guy on the left was thin and chain smoking and the guy across looked exhausted and had a huge stomach... quit the contrast.
View from the fortress
View of "old town", churches and squares, with the river cutting off old town from the rest of city.
"Horse" square, great fountain with four giant horses rearing out of the fountain and spurting water our of their noses (sort of ren and stimpy-ish).
